As things slowly progress back to normal in my life (but really is normal one should ask?) we are hit with a heat wave. Not just any heat wave, but in this woman’s humble opinion, the mother of all heat waves. This morning, while walking out the door to get Rick to pre-school, I noted it was warm. when I got into my car, the thermamoter gauge read eighty one.
EIGHTY ONE! at 8:30 in the morning!!! This is not going to be a good day.
and it wasn’t.
it got up to almost 100.
the power went off at work, so no a/c
power went off at pre-school so we had o go get our children, so they didn’t get heat stroke.
our apartment is on the 4th floor. the sun shines in it all day. there is no A/C
it was 97 degrees in the house tonight at 6pm
Ricky and I spent an hour wandering the grocery store for the a/c
we ate ben and jerry’s for dinner
and now, my adorable three year old, is asleep in the bathtub, because it’s cool.
and I am curling up on the floor next to him.
yep. it is hot.

My darling SuperTiff
let me first of all say what needs to be said: you are braver then you believe, stronger then you seem and smarter then you think….
My thoughts on turning thirty are simple: in your twenties, you act out. you try to figure out who you are. you do what you think you need to do. you rebel.
In your 30s: you discover who you are. what you are made of. and that no matter what life throws at you, be it dog shit or happiness, you realize your reflexes are faster then you thought.
my dear,
this is my wish for you: comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows that follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when your spirits sag (from california of course!!), beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so you can believe, CONFIDENCE for when you are in doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth and love to complete your life.
my thirties have been rough, my teens were rougher. being half way through my 30s now, if I can offer you one word of advice it would be simply this (and I am sure you recognize it and I recall reading that you liked that musical. while not my favorite, I have lost many friends to HIV so this 35 year old generation X’er can relate)
No other path, no other way…No day but today.
Happy 30th birthday my dear. may you have 60 or more yet to come!
Be well and I will see you in July,
Rachel.

My mother is a bit strange. First of all, she voted for Bush. (yes, I know, WTF?!!) We don’t always see eye to eye but today she sent me this card. On the front is this wierd fairy thing. at first I think she mixed up her kids because faires are Iris’s thing, not mine. I open it.
“My Rachel,
May you be surrounded with love, blessings, courage and grace and of course humor as you meet the challenges that meet you now and as you move into this part of your life. This recent experience will give you insights, compassion and wisdom. and, just one more, may all your gifts of wisdom, competence and intelligence and hit, help you keep your mind open to the fact that all things are possible.”
wow. my mom is a poet.

Hi,
I moved today. to my new place. in the castro. it’s closer to the kid’s preschool. my little boy, who now insists on being called Rick because of this preschool having three Rickys, has his own bedroom! and a “big boy” bed! that’s right! no more toddler bed for Rick, he’s a big boy now. and he loves jumping on his bed. of course that breaks my heart a little bit. they grow so fast.

Hi. I am Jenn. I work with Rachel. Joshua asked us all to write down a few memories of Rachel that no one else would have or tidbits people wouldn’t know and he’s going to put them online.
When I first met Rachel, the very first thing I thought was, “they have hired a teenager.” She had just finished interviewing and accepted her position. I was the only one in the office at the time so our boss brought her into my area to introduce her.
Let me describe what she was like for you on that first meeting. She was wearing a light blue skirt and a black blazer. It really reminded me of something Jackie O would have worn in the 60s. Her blouse was silk and the same pale blue as her skirt. Her black heels were so high I wondered how she even walked in them. Her hair, which for those of you who have not had the pleasure of seeing it, was pulled back tightly in a bun, but you could tell that it was very curly. I thought she must of used a lot of product to get it to behave like that. Lastly, her glasses were these thick and nerdy cat style glasses. To be honest, she looked like she was 15 and trying to play the role of a grown up. In fact, I even asked our boss how old she was when she left but he said to ask her.
Anyway, that was almost two and a half years ago and I don’t think I have ever seen Rach in those shoes again. Turns out when she took them off, she looked even more like a child as she barely reached 4’11.
Get well soon babe!!! I miss you and the coffee talk we have in the mornings.
